All-American Jershon Cobb scored 24 points to lead Columbia (Decatur, GA) into the championship game of the 2009 Beach Ball Classic with a 55-51 victory over Cedar Hill (TX).
The Eagles (11-3) will take on the winner of the Bishop Gorman (NV)-Scott County (KY) meeting in the title game on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. Cedar Hil (14-3) will take on the loser of that contest in the third place game.
Cedar Hill, which placed third in the 2003 BBC, looked ready to make its first BBC final in three appearances. The Longhorns, trailing 26-23 early in the second half, used a 14-4 run to open a 39-30 advantage with 9:44 to play.
The Longhorns would stretch the lead to 10 before Columbia would make a push to get back into the game. Jarmal Reid's free throw with 4:39 to play capped a 13-3 run to tie the game at 44-44 with 4:39 on the clock.
JerShon Cobb gained the first lead of the second half for Columbia with a pair of free throws with 4:23 to play. Thomas Gipson made an old-fashioned 3-point play at the 3:13 mark to give Cedar Hill a 49-48 lead.
Cobb then game Columbia the lead at 50-49 on a 12-foot jumper with 2:37 to play. The Eagles would connect on six free throws in the final minute to hold on for the victory.
Chris Grier and Jarmal Reid added 10 points each for the Eagles. Cedar Hill was paced by Gipson's 21 poinst and eight rebounds.
