Playing without a pair of starters, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) scored an impressive 79-62 victory over Bishop O'Connell (Arlington, VA) in the final opening round game of the 2009 Beach Ball Classic.
Bishop Gorman (7-1) played without the services of injured Shabazz Muhammad, the top-rated sophomore in the nation, and Xavier Grimble, who is participating in the Under Armour All-Star Football Game. Senior Anson Winder stepped in to fill the voids as he posted game-highs of 32 points and nine rebounds.
The Gaels grabbed the lead for good with 6:45 to play in the first half and built a 43-26 lead by the halftime break. Bishop Gorman went on to lead by as many as 26 points in the second half.
Both teams were impressive from the field as Bishop Gorman connected on 56.1 percent (32-of-57) from the field while Bishop O'Connell hit 54.5 percent (22-of-44) of its shots. The Knights were forced into 21 turnovers that Bishop Gorman turned into 22 points.
Rosco Allen added 16 points for Bishop Gorman while point guard Jonathan Loyd posted seven points, eight assists, and three steals.
Jordan Burgess paced Bishop O'Connnell with 16 points and seven boards. University of North Carolina signee Kendall Marshall tallied 14 points and dished out seven assists.
