In a game that featured 10 ties and 10 lead changes, Columbia (Decatur, GA) edged Concord (NC) 64-61 to advance to the semifinal round of the 2009 Beach Ball Classic.
The final tie of the game was at 61-61 when Concord's Will Vanderburg connected on a 3-pointer with 1:19 to play. It also marked the final time that the Spiders would score.
Tahj Shamsid-Deen connected on a pair of free throws with 32 seconds remaining to give Columbia a 63-61 advantage. Concord's Jacquise Moor then had the ball go through his hands for the Spriders' 17th turnover with 21 seconds remaining. The Spiders did not foul immediately and waited until there wre just eight seconds on the clock to send Jarmal Reid to the line.
Reid missed the first but made the second to give Columbia a three-point cushion. Concord's C.J. Gridine ran the length of the floor and handed to Vanderburg for the final shot. Vanderburg's attempt from behind the arc was wide right of the rim as the final buzzer sounded.
Columbia (10-3) was paced by Chris Grier's 17 points and nine rebounds. Gridine led Concord (6-4) with 16 points, while Jacquise Moore added 10 points and seven rebounds.
