Super sophomore Jahil Okafor powered Whitney Young to a 78-62 opening round victory over Lexington (SC).
In a game that was tied twice early on, Whitney Young (5-2; Chicago, IL) held control of the contest through much of the contest. The reason was the play of the 6-11 Okafor as he scored 36 points, tying him for the 29th best single game output in the 31-year history of the Beach Ball Classic. He led the way to the Dolphins holding a commanding 48-28 scoring advantage in the paint.
The Dolphins also connected on 32-of-44 from the field for a 72.7 shooting percentage, ranking second all-time in the BBC. Okafor hit 14-of-16 from the field. Paul White, who added 14 points for Whitney Young, connected on 7-of-9 from the field.
Nygel Gates led Lexington (8-3; Lexington, SC) with 21 points, while Joby Glymph added 18 points for the Wildcats.
